THE GOOD AND BEAUTIFUL GOD

James Bryan Smith

Featured Books I recently read The Good and Beautiful God by James Bryan Smith and am currently working through it with a group of guys on Sunday mornings. The book is great because it challenges you to think about your views of God to see if they are in line with what Jesus taught us. This dramatically affects, as the book points out, your relationship with God and how you live out your days. At the end of each chapter, there is a “soul training” exercise that reinforces the correct view of God put forth in the chapter. I found these exercises to be extremely practical and useful in drawing close to God and in helping to see Him in the proper light. I would highly recommend this book. I would also recommend that you go through it with a small group or friend because the chapters are sure to bring about great discussion, and it’s always good to have someone keep you accountable for the exercises as well.

RADICAL: TAKING BACK YOUR FAITH FROM THE AMERICAN DREAM
by David Platt

Featured Books If you’ve read books long enough, no doubt you’ve come across several that you think everyone should read. I just finished reading such a book and the lasting impression has me daydreaming of ways I can better live my life for Christ. This book may not be for everyone, and may not have the same impact on your life that it did on mine, but take a second to read the following excerpt from pages 172 & 173 of Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt.

“The reward of the American dream is safety, security, and success found in more comfort, better stuff, and greater prosperity. But the reward of Christ trumps all these things and beckons us to live for an eternal safety, security, and satisfaction that far outweigh everything this world has to offer.”

If you’re intrigued by this or it captures your heart or mind’s interest, then this book is a must-read for you!

THE ME I WANT TO BE
by John Ortberg

Featured Books In this, my personal favorite of John Ortberg’s many books, he reminds us that God has created each of us to simply, but profoundly, be ourselves. He says, “When you flourish, you become more you. You become more of that person God had in mind when He thought you up. You don’t just become holier. You become you-ier… God wants to redeem you, not exchange you.”

In Ortberg’s discerning, yet unadorned manner, he shines the light of God’s truth on our humble, but holy nature according to God’s sanctifying plan. He describes the Holy Spirit’s transforming work as He redeems our minds, our time, our relationships, and our experiences. This book changed my thinking on spiritual formation.
