Celebrate Recovery

An interview with Teresa Peden, Pastoral Associate of LifeCare

What is Celebrate Recovery?

Celebrate Recovery meets Thursdays at Crossings Community Center Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a Christ-Centered recovery program based on the 12 Steps and the eight principles from the Beatitudes. It’s an internationally recognized program to help individuals with their hurts, habits, and hang-ups. It can be summed up as “helping pain change through Jesus Christ in the ministry of the Holy Spirit.”

As Rick Warren from Saddleback Church states, “People often carry hurts from 30 or 40 years ago, and in spite of the expression time heals all wounds, it isn’t really true. Time often makes things worse, and time only extends the pain if the problem isn’t dealt with.”

CR provides an opportunity to deal with the challenges of both the past and present and is used to transform lives and help people grow towards full Christ-like maturity.

You mentioned hurts, habits, and hang-ups. What exactly are those?

All of us face obstacles in our lives that we have had a hard time overcoming. In CR, we call these issues hurts, habits, and hang-ups. These can range from control issues, anger, depression, family dynamics, abusive relationships, and addictions. Oftentimes we are in denial and neglect to seek the help we need to heal from these challenges.

So can anyone come to CR?

Anyone and everyone over 18 are welcome at CR. We believe there are no individuals that walk this earth who have not dealt with some type of hurt, habit, or hang-up. All are welcome to come to CR to experience the healing that takes place in a Christ-centered environment.

How about confidentiality? Isn’t that typical for 12 step programs?

The beauty of CR is that it allows us to be open and transparent and thankful that Christ has forgiven our past and loves us as we are. Leaders and participants join together to create a safe environment where no one feels judged no matter what they have dealt with in their lives. As in all 12 Step programs, anonymity and confidentiality are of utmost importance.

So what could I expect when attending a night of CR?

An evening at CR begins with dinner and fellowship. This is an opportunity for connecting and building community before the worship service begins. The CR service includes: praise and worship; teaching; and personal testimonies of those who have experienced healing through CR. After the service, we break into small groups that are both topic and gender specific. Groups are based on the specific hurts, habits, and hang-ups that individuals are facing. The evening concludes with coffee and desserts.

If I am already in a 12 Step program, would CR be beneficial?

Absolutely! CR can be complementary to any other 12 Step program. One difference you might find at CR is that we focus solely on Jesus Christ being the higher power and the healer of all hurts, habits, and hang-ups.

Sounds like this is an incredible opportunity! Anything else you would like our readers to know about this program?

I am very excited about Crossings offering this new opportunity, and I would encourage you to be a part of it, whether you plan to participate or to volunteer your time. CR is an excellent outreach tool and has the potential to have an amazing impact on people’s lives in our congregation and in our community. We look forward to seeing you there!

How did you decide to get involved with Celebrate Recovery?

I have been part of a 12 Step program for over the past two years and have benefited tremendously from it. Before joining that program, my life was extremely rocky, and I was afraid to feel certain emotions. Even though I was a Christian and knew that I should be able to turn to Christ for healing, I don’t think I truly believed deep down within my soul that God would want to help free me from certain issues that reigned in my life. I guess I felt that there were things that I was supposed to be able to handle myself, and that I just wasn’t trying hard enough. Over the years, I have learned that it is not simply about getting rid of the addiction or “hurt, hang-up, or habit” as stated in the CR material ... The basis is to realize that God can and will change our lives, clean up the wreckage of our past, and encourage us to live a life of service to others.

I became excited about CR because ALL within our church are dealing with something that has hurt them or is keeping them from experiencing life to the fullest—the life that Christ promised us on this side of heaven. We all need recovery from the Sin-disease that meets us outside the doors of the church daily and tries to keep us from becoming who we truly have been created to be. After attending the CR Summit, I have seen just how big of an impact CR can have on the church, and I believe God has brought me along a path in life that can be used to help others find this freedom.
