Guilty … or Just Feeling Guilty?
Weapons of Mass Destruction series, part seven

True guilt = alerts us when we have done wrong or when we have violated a relationship and need to take corrective measures
"What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record." –Psalm 32:1-2 Living

False guilt = false accusations from Satan concerning past forgiven sins or other issues
"Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." –I Peter 5:8 NIV

How do we deal with guilt?

  1. Confess our sins.
"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us …" –1 John 1:9 NIV

  2. Accept God's forgiveness.
"There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." –Romans 8:1 NIV

  3. Believe you are really forgiven.
"For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." –Jeremiah 31:34 NIV

  4. Forgive yourself.
"Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past." –Isaiah 43:18 NIV

"So overflowing is His kindness toward us that He took away all our sins through the blood of His Son, by whom we are saved; and He has showered down upon us the richness of His grace -- for how well He understands us and knows what is best for us at all times." –Ephesians 1:7-8 Living

"You were dead in sins, and your sinful desires were not yet cut away. Then he gave you a share in the very life of Christ, for he forgave all your sins, and blotted out the charges proved against you, the list of his commandments which you had not obeyed. He took this list of sins and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ's cross. In this way God took away Satan's power to accuse you of sin, and God openly displayed to the whole world Christ's triumph at the cross where your sins were all taken away." –Colossians 2:13-15 Living

Meditation

Dozens of people go to God to be cured of some particular sin which they are ashamed of (like lust or physical cowardice) or which is obviously spoiling life (like bad temper or drunkenness). Well, He will cure it all right: but He will not stop there. That may be all you asked; but if you once call Him in, He will give you the full treatment.

That is why He warned people to "count the cost" before becoming Christians. "Make no mistake," He says, "if you let Me, I will make you perfect. The moment you put yourself in My hands, that is what you are in for. Nothing less, or other, than that. You have free will, and if you choose, you can push Me away. But if you do not push Me away, understand that I am going to see this job through."
